Challenges Expected in the Short Term After Bariatric Surgery

Weight Loss Goal and People's Expectations

The first 6 months after surgery is the period when weight loss occurs most rapidly. Weight loss is expected to continue until the 18th month. The person's preoperative weight, body structure, and accompanying diseases create individual differences in weight loss. The main goal here is not to lose weight quickly, but to lose weight as healthily as possible.

Healthy eating

Healthy eating should be made a lifestyle. You should not have a late breakfast, you should not stay hungry for more than 4 hours, and protein-rich foods should be preferred for main and snack meals. Fibrous foods such as vegetables and fruits should be included. At least 6-8 glasses of water should be consumed a day.

Eating Behavior

People's motivation is high with the increased motivation, changing clothes, and positive reactions received along with weight loss. It should not be forgotten that this is a good opportunity to change eating habits in this early period.

Protein, Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies After Bariatric Surgery

Although bariatric surgery positively affects the general health of the obese individual, it also brings with it the risks of serious nutritional deficiencies. Complications that may develop after surgery, such as inadequate energy intake, rapid weight loss, food intolerance, lack of nutritional support or long-term vomiting complaints, may cause nutritional deficiencies. In these cases, using recommended supplements will prevent deficiencies.
